SUMMARY:Frances Arnold - Member Spotlight - February 25
DESCRIPTION:everyday that I’m away from my home in an hour radious I can be paid a perdium to myself \nPlease join The Trusteeship as we share a rare evening with fellow member\, Dr. Frances Arnold\, 2018 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. \nPlease join The Trusteeship as we shine the spotlight on Frances. \nThis will be a great\, once in a lifetime event where Frances will share her Stockholm experience of winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry which was presented to her on December 11\, 2018 by the King of Sweden\, His Royal Highness\, Carl XVI Gustaf. She’s the fifth female chemistry laureate since the prizes first began in 1901\, and the only American woman to ever win in the subject. \nFrances\, the Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Engineering\, Bioengineering and Biochemistry\, won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for “the directed evolution of enzymes”. Directed evolution\, pioneered by Frances in the early 1990s\, is a bioengineering method for creating new and better enzymes in the laboratory using the principles of evolution. Today\, the method is used in hundreds of laboratories and companies that make everything from laundry detergents to biofuels to medicines. Enzymes created with the technique have replaced toxic chemicals in many industrial processes. Additionally\, Frances shares the prize with George P. Smith of the University of Missouri in Columbia\, who developed a “phage display” method for evolving proteins\, and Sir Gregory P. Winter of the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge\, United Kingdom\, who used phage display for evolving antibodies. \nFellow Trusteeship member\, Emmy and Pulitzer award winning journalist\, Patt Morrison\, who became friends with Frances through The Trusteeship and traveled with her to the Stockholm festivities\, will conduct the interview about the science behind the famous award as well as the festivities. \nWe’ll begin the evening with a reception (wine and hors d’oeuvres) followed by a seated dinner in Caltech’s Athenaeum’s gorgeous private room. Following dinner\, Patt and Frances will begin the program.
