SUMMARY:The Music Center’s THE RHYTHM OF CUBA\, A Part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA
DESCRIPTION:THE RHYTHM OF CUBA COMES TO L.A.!\n\n\n\n\nWest Coast Premiere of Malpaso Dance Company \n\n\n\n\nCelebrate the rhythm of Cuba with the syncopated movements of Havana-based Malpaso Dance Company at The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on December 2. Led by its charismatic artistic director Osnel Delgado\, Malpaso is committed to bringing Cuban contemporary dance into the 21st century by fusing movements from the streets with traditional dance through collaborations with top international choreographers and new voices in Cuban dance. \nHome to iconic dance traditions such as the Habanera\, Son\, Mambo and Cha-Cha\, Cuba has a deep history as “a dancing island.” Malpaso honors that history\, yet creates a dance vocabulary all its own\, blending ballet technique with earthy modern dance articulated by fluid athleticism. \n\n\n\n\nThis dance presentation is a special add-on engagement to the 17/18 Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center season and part of The Music Center’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA programming\, Cuba: Antes/Ahora\, Then/Now\, a three-day event featuring celebrated dancers\, musicians and visual artists from all over Cuba.

SUMMARY:Special Access: Herb Ritts: L.A. Style at the Getty Center
DESCRIPTION:At the beautiful Getty Museum\, high on a hill overlooking the 405 Freeway\, Trusteeship members were the special guests of The J. Paul Getty Trust for a memorable evening hosted by Joanne Kozberg\, a trustee of The Getty.  Trusteeship members enjoyed after-hours access to the museum\, a special presentation and curated tour of the Herb Ritts: L.A. Style exhibit\, and a private reception.  The Getty’s Associate Curator of Photographs\, Paul Martineau\, gave an insider’s look in the work of Ritts\, who revolutionized fashion photography\, modernized the nude and transformed celebrities into icons.  The exhibit showcased the sophistication that is synonymous with Ritts—a primarily black and white palette combined with an innovative eye that plays on body formation and bold graphic contrasts.  The human head was a favorite Ritts subject; it is depicted veiled\, wrapped in hair\, even with a dead octopus on top\, tentacles simulating hair.

SUMMARY:Special Access: Eli Broad Interviewed by Larry King
DESCRIPTION:The Trusteeship experienced an unusual and insightful evening in June when the King of Conversation (Larry King) interviewed the King of Being Unreasonable (Eli Broad) at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica.  Dale Franzen\, new Trusteeship member and Director of the Broad Stage\, graciously hosted the evening\, which included front row seats and a reception on the terrace.  The focus of the interview was “The Art of Being Unreasonable\,” Broad’s new book (everyone present received an autographed copy).  Asked by King “exactly what this being unreasonable is about\,” Broad responded\, “It’s asking why not!  It’s when you want to do things that haven’t been done before\, that people don’t believe can be done.”  With their camaraderie and wit\, the two men created a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for the audience.

SUMMARY:Special Access: Stem Cell Research at UCLA
DESCRIPTION:At UCLA\, scientists are working on “miracles in the making\,” at the Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research.  In May 2012\, Trusteeship members were the guests of UCLA through the generosity of member Judith Gasson\, Director of UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.  The event began with a tour of the Broad Center – more than 26\,000 square feet of state-of-the-art laboratories and offices\, where doctors and staff spoke about their work in stem cell research.  The evening continued with a lovely dinner in the Faculty Center\, followed by a panel discussion featuring Dr. Owen Witte\, UCLA Broad Stem Cell Research Center Director\, Center Co-Director Gay Crooks and Associate Professor Hanna Mikkola.  What an inspiring\, optimistic glimpse into the mind-boggling (to most of us) world of the future of medicine.

SUMMARY:Special Access: Georgia O'Keeffe
DESCRIPTION:At the beautiful\, Renaissance-style Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles\, Trusteeship members spent a very special evening learning more about Georgia O’Keeffe.  Barbara Buhler Lynes\, a member of the IWF in Santa Fe and curator of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the Emily Fisher Landau Director of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center\, spoke to the group particularly about the artist’s homes.  “She had a profound appreciation for the natural world\, which can easily be seen through her choices in where to reside\,” said Barbara.  Moving from New York in 1929\, O’Keeffe settled in New Mexico where her two homes were set in open land and decorated in minimalist style so as not to distract from the gorgeous surroundings.  Barbara’s enthusiasm for and love of her topic was contagious—everyone left wanting to know even more about the amazing artist.

SUMMARY:Special Access: Private Tour A+D Museum and LACMA
DESCRIPTION:Trusteeship members were given an inside view of two exhibits from the Getty Foundation’s “Pacific Standard Time” program in January 2012.  At the A+D Museum\, Deborah Sussman (who worked closely with Charles and Ray Eames early in her career) led members through Eames Words\, which focused on how the Eameses viewed “the uncommon beauty of common things” such as oranges\, skateboard and balls of twine.  At LACMA\, the evening continued with a tour of California Design: Living in a Modern Way\, the first major study of California mid-century modern design.  Ming Fung\, the architect of this showcase\, provided a lively\, informative narrative as she explained the four-part (Shaping\, Making\, Living\, Selling) structure of the exhibit.  The evening ended in the bustling vibe and outdoor setting of Ray’s at LACMA – a fabulous meal to top off a wonderful event.
